Hair Accessory Basics
Since your wedding day calls for total glam from head to toe many brides are reaching for a fun hair accessory to compliment their perfect ‘do! With such a huge selection of pins, combs, clips, and barrettes the only hard part will be narrowing down your favorites! Below you’ll find a list of some of the hottest looks for dressing up your tresses.

Tiaras- Your wedding is one of the only times you get to wear one of these without sporting a Halloween costume or being crowned Prom Queen so if it’s something you’ve always dreamed of then go for it! Tiaras are timelessly elegant and will most certainly set you apart as the royalty of your special day. Styles range from the Cinderella-inspired to the more understated and can be decorated with pearls, crystals, precious stones, flowers, or almost anything else you can think of. With so many beautiful options, you’ll have no problem finding one to complete your ensemble!

Combs- These also come in a wide variety of styles and can be worn attached to the veil or slid into an updo for added elegance. Some brides opt to wear it as part of their veil for the ceremony and then detach it to wear by itself for the reception. If you’re looking for something a little different, try an accessory shaped as a vine or branch to add a touch of drama to your ‘do. Rather than the traditional style of one large comb, smaller ones are used at the end of each branch to hold the hairpiece in place. It creates a beautiful but unexpected twist to your hairstyle!

Clips or barrettes- I love these because they can be fixed securely into your hair thus making you feel more confident that they won’t come flying out with your first twirl on the dance floor! Unlike some of the other accessories, they also give you more placement options since they can be snapped into place anywhere in your hair and not just stuck on top. A far cry from the utilitarian barrette, these clips come in many different styles from the intricate to the plain and are sure to add some sparkle to your big day ‘do!

Pins- These are probably my favorite type of hair accessory and are what I used for my wedding! Like clips and barrettes, hair pins also offer greater placement versatility and come in a wide range of styles; you can find anything from flowers, to crystal clusters, to just a single pearl. Pins add a delicate, feminine touch to your wedding day tresses and can look especially pretty when used in conjunction with softly curled hair worn either up or down. Another way to wear hair pins: place a few of them together in a group to mimic the look of a comb or barrette. By doing so you can customize the size, shape, and style of your hair accessory!

Bows- I’ve seen a number of pretty and unexpected hair accessories using bows and I must say I like the effect! There are two looks I’m particularly fond of. One is achieved by attaching a clean bow (no edges hanging out) to a piece of ribbon and wearing it as a headband. Instead of perching the bow on top of your head Alice in Wonderland style, wear it to the side just above one ear for a girly but sophisticated look. My other favorite is created by making tiny bows out of a thin, satin ribbon and then tying or gluing them to the top of hair pins. When the pins are pushed in you’re left with beautiful little bows floating on top of your hair!

Flowers- whether worn in a circlet, bun wrap, or all by itself, flowers are the ultimate feminine accessory. If you don’t want to go with a white one, consider choosing a bloom that matches your wedding colors or reflects the feel of your reception site. How you wear the flower and the type of blossom you choose can either give your style a more relaxed or a more formal feeling making this an extremely versatile accessory. The fact that they smell so good doesn’t hurt either!

Keep in mind that these are just a few of the most popular examples of hair accessories. Headbands, jeweled hair nets, caps, and even feathers are some of the other options available to the bride looking to complete her wedding day look. If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for in a bridal salon, don’t be afraid to hit the internet or thumb through magazines to see a broader selection.

Now for a couple of final tips! Make sure you have your stylist place your accessories in your hair before everything is set with hairspray. If you do it afterward you’ll have a hard time getting them to stay in your hair. Also, if you’re using an accessory that has pearls or tinted stones in it hold it up to your dress to make sure that the colors match. This will be especially important if your dress isn’t pure white; paper-white pearls with an ivory dress will stand out in all the wrong ways! Finally, have fun with your search! Think of all the beautiful pieces you’ll get to try on as you look for the one to “top off’ the rest of your wedding day accessories!
