Ways to Include your Pets in your Wedding
To include your pet, or not to include your pet: that is the question. Although your furry companion has been there for you during your past dating disasters that have led you to this high point in your life, you can't guarantee its behavior. On the other hand, incorporating your pet in the wedding is a memorable and personal touch that can make your day even more special.

Whether you're determined to honor your pet or still mulling the idea over in your head, know that there are a variety of ways to show off your four-legged friend. Training them to walk down the aisle as a ring bearer is not your only option.

Pet Checklist

Before you even start training your pet, there are some issues you should clear up first. Below are some questions that can save you time, money and complaints:

1. Are any of your guests allergic to pets?
2. Does the wedding and/or reception location allow pets?
3. Who will be responsible for the pet?
4. Should your pet be kept on a leash?
5. Do you want your pet to wear anything?
6. If the pet is unable to perform its wedding duties, do you have a back up plan?

At this point, you might have realized that there are some holes in your plan, but it doesn't mean you can't make it happen. You can always adjust the seating arrangement or compromise and have the pet at the reception only. Considering these issues ahead of time will help to prevent those major disappointments.

Pet Groomsman or Bridesmaid

Adding your pet to the wedding party can be charming, especially if you find the perfect dog, cat or bird wedding attire. With this option you can have Fido walk down the aisle on or off its leash. Another member of your bridal party can physically hand the leash to the appropriate person, or a bridesmaid or groomsman who has already made it down the aisle can be holding a treat to ensure that the pet goes to the right side. This is a perfect way to even out the bridal party too, but be sure to check with your friend and make sure they feel comfortable with it.

Pet Show Reception

Brides and grooms are now surprising guests with a choreographed dance during their wedding reception. But what about a carefully planned pet show? This might give you inspiration to create a dance that involves your pet, or you and your mate can show off a collection of tricks. Training your pet takes time, effort and dedication, so entertain your guests with your dog's endearing traits that you have worked so hard on during the past months. Be creative by using common tricks such as sit, fetch or speak in unique ways. The ideas are endless as long as you can get your pet to do them.

Ring Bearer (Most Popular)

Dogs can make lovely ring bearers as long as they listen, remember the training and don't get spooked by the guests. Your pet can wear a pillow on its back or forehead—the back is probably a safer place. Or you can train your dog to carry a basket in its mouth—a challenging trick, but wouldn't it make everyone smile?

Training, Training & More Training

Pets can become distracted quicker than people, and you have to keep in mind that most animals have a children's mentality. The best way to train your pet is to use positive reinforcement. Dogs might give you an easier time, because they are known for being loyal and wanting to please their masters.

Whichever way you decide to physically include your pet in the wedding, make sure to start training as soon as possible. If you have never trained your pet to do more challenging tricks such as give paw or stay, it doesn't hurt to seek an expert's advice. Often local pet stores will have training programs or at least be able to point you in the right direction. Or maybe online resources and books are all you need.

Once your pet gets a hang of the task, continue practicing and don't quit until the big day. It's also important to have your pet perform the trick in front of friends and large groups of people. This will better prepare your pet and decrease the chances of stage fright. Don’t forget that it also helps if you feel calm and confident too.

Family Photograph

If you decide that having your pet in the wedding is too risky, there is an alternative that can brighten your spirits as well as everyone else's.

What are your wedding favors? One suggestion is to place some flower seeds into a stylish doggie bag for guests to take home. To make it more personable, include a family photograph (you, your partner and your pet) and a special message about loyalty, companionship and love.

Another cute idea is to attach a family photograph to doggy bags that guests can use to take cookies home in. If you're going to have more than one cookie table, this can prevent you from ending up with all of the sweet treats.

To some owners, pets are like their children and family, so if you're this type of pet owner, start making plans to include your beloved dog, cat or bird so you don't regret it.
